For Your Lordship's information. Copy of a reply just received from H.M.'s Acting Consul at Canton.

(Telegram) this morning, Shamian.
Canton, 10th September.
I received off a telegram from you at 10 reporting that Shamian was in danger and houses burnt. Since then several more houses have been burnt and the mob has been very threatening.
At last we have a force of Chinese soldiers, but I have very little confidence in them. I trust you will be able to send a sufficiently strong Naval Force.
